Josh Dorfman shares tips from his latest book, The Lazy Environementalist on A Budget. The 5 minute video below is worth watching in full if you’re ready to help the planet this Earth Day and be damn lazy about it too.

Some of his tips like using water filters instead of buying bottles is pretty basic but he also introduces some things you may not have heard of like recycled mulch made from old car tires. I’ve also written about 10 lazy ways to save the environment and how to get your kids green too.

Recycle Old Phone Books

Phone books are a complete waste of space, energy, and outdated. Not to mention that but they are really not suited for the lazy at heart. Who can be bothered to search for a listing, when there is the Internet?

Most states offer some (usually free) way to recycle those big ugly yellow paperweights.

It’s a great way to be green the lazy way and even get your kids involved. Recycling is great and all, but if you really want to stop the paper war, write to your Congressperson and tell them ~~how much they suck~~ much waste phone books create. Oh, and they are a pain in the ass to get rid off, tell them that too.

Those of you who have kids can really use them as workers in your evil plots of world domination, house cleaners, and eco-warriors. Parenting.com’s list is a bit weak if you ask me and you can make your kids take an extra step.

Put your kids in charge of reminding you to switch off the lights when you leave a room.

Better yet, why not make them turn off the lights for you if they’re tall enough? Teaching them to pick up trash around the house, turn off the water when they brush their teeth,� and have them eat organic. Maybe the best way (aside from doing slave-labor like litter cleanup) is to teach them the importance of respecting the world around them.

It doesn’t take much energy to make your life greener and MSN recommends 13 quick ways to do so. Aside from changing your light bulbs from tungsten to compact fluorescent you can buy renewable energy offsets and insulate your water heater – a one time deal.

The obvious way to pull the plug on so-called energy vampires is to do just that — pull the plug. If you don’t want to keep rebooting your PC, you can reduce the juice to it by putting both the monitor and the computer itself in sleep mode when they’re not in use. Computers operating on snooze control use about 95% less electricity than those running on full powers.

It’s very difficult to be lazy if there is no planet to be lazy on. There are some effective ways to go green without leaving your room.

Switch to a green energy supplier on the web.
- This is one of the easiest and most effective things you can do to reduce your energy use – an average household could save 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
Don’t leave your appliances on standby.
- Try the Intelliplug which automatically powers off your computer peripherals (monitor, speakers etc) when you switch off your PC. (Or get a Mac mini.)
Eat less meat and more local, organic food.
- Believe it or not, the stomachs of the world’s 1.4 billion cows account for 14% of global emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than CO2. (Damn that’s a lot of cow farting.)
Get involved, stay informed.
- Spend two minutes emailing your MP on behalf of Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace or Stop Climate Chaos and you can get back to the sofa knowing you’ve done your bit for the day.
